What Is The Circular Economy?

The circular economy is a model of production and consumption where materials never become waste. Products and materials are kept in circulation through processes like maintenance, reuse, refurbishment, remanufacture, recycling, and composting.

Central to achieving a circular economy is design.

Product design:
Designing products for circularity, ensuring they remain fit for purpose, while optimising material choice and usage to minimise energy and resource consumption.

System design:
Understanding that circularity requires the full value chain to shift. Designing new systems, solutions and interventions to enable the transition to a circular economy, while balancing the short term need to cooperate within the existing value chain constraints driven from the ‘traditional’ linear take-make-consume-throw away approach.

Commercial design:
It is important to design new commercially viable and sustainable business models to drive business demand and growth.  It also represents an opportunity to avoid future costs by getting ahead of future legislation and compliance fees. Sources of revenue will evolve or change, investment strategies will need to consider the circular value of resources, and the perception of productivity will shift from cost minimisation to efficiency and extending life.

Organisational design:
The creation of circular systems will create new interdependencies between departments and stakeholders. New structures, positions, responsibilities and KPIs will be needed to drive success and to measure performance and impact.
